The walkie-talkie was selected because it encourages fun, imaginative play, but its limited functionality can cause the experience to become boring fairly quickly.

How might we reimagine the walkie-talkie to create a new meaning that goes beyond simple communication?

Kids ages 8–18 average 7.5 hours of daily screen time, which is linked to less social connection and increased safety concerns for parents.

Digital Overload

With heavy technology use, children are having less real-life interaction and there are growing concerns about their well-being and safety, often influenced by parents giving kids phones to stay aware of their safety.

Goals

Enable screen-free connection between kids while encouraging real-world interaction

Provide a safe, easy way for kids to contact parents for reassurance and emergencies without using phones

toy to Functional Design

I drew from kids’ toys to create a soft, friendly walkie-talkie with fun motion and lights that encourage kids to interact, offering a more engaging alternative to children connection rather than relying on technology.

Users slide to turn it on, choose who to connect with, then press the speaker button to talk—ears pop out to show it’s ready.
