NovaMist

This project presents a conceptual smart fire suppression system designed for residential kitchens.

Timeline

Fall 2025 I 15 weeks

About 49 % of all reported residential structure fires start in the kitchen — making the kitchen by far the most common location for home fires

The Gap of Fire Safety

Residential fire safety hasn’t changed much for residential homes. This creates an opportunity to redesign fire safety as a simple household product that fits naturally into daily kitchen routines.

Lessons from Front Lines

Quote 1

“Having more devices tailored for residential buildings would be beneficial”

Quote 2

“It would be cool to have a device activate a suppressant once it detects a fire like the commercial sprinkler system”

How can we design a new innovative way to suppress fires that can both detect and suppress kitchen fires before tragedy strikes?

Smart Integrated Response System

Clear Action Under Stress

Aim and Spray

A compact, easily replaceable suppressant canister, a heat sensor that triggers suppressant release, and an alarm system that notifies all household members. To simplify and speed up emergency response, ensuring that even under stress, users can act quickly and effectively to contain a fire and alert others.

Affirming the Decisions

Users Quotes:

“Grabbing the pad just made sense”

“It feels comfortable in my hand”
